Survival Skills Clinic - In The Rain! - 2/25/07

Wilderness Survival Skills Class

On Sunday, February 25th, we held another wilderness survival & indigenous skills class in Boulder Creek, CA. The students who signed up for this weekend's primitive skills class had no idea they would be making fire, in the rain! The day was filled with challenges, but everyone had a great time and went home with valuable skills and the knowledge of Shelter, Water, Fire, & Food in a Survival Situation.

Luckily there was a gazebo-like structure at the boy scouts camp to practice skills under. There was no fire ring, but there was a BBQ! All the moisture in the air meant that making fire by friction was no easy task. Students took to a partner method and were very successful and learned to adapt these important skills to a variety of poor-weather conditions.

Although the weather was gloomy, we still had smiles on our faces while coal burning spoons and rock-boiling water. We learned one thing for sure. Stay dry in a survival situation!

Save the Polar Bears

Due to global warming and arctic drilling, the polar ice caps are disappearing faster than we thought possible. This presents a major problem for the animals of the Arctic that call the polar ice caps home such as the Polar Bear, whom have already felt the effects of the changing habitat. More Cubs are dying, more bears are drowning and birth rates are falling. Help to get these threatened animals onto the Bush Administration's Endangered Species Act to help ensure a future for these Arctic creatures. New Intern at Adventure Out

Name: Kim Nelson

Age: 23

Hello all, my name is Kim and I'm the newest addition to the Adventure Out team. Currently I am in my last semester at San Francisco State majoring in Commercial Recreation and Resort Management, graduating in May (YAY!). Energetic and outgoing, I am always trying new things and talking others into joining them with me, whether it be getting a group of friends to get their scuba certs with me to talking my mom into shark diving with me in Hawaii (yes, I actually pulled that off). Due to my power of persuasion mixed with enthusiasm, I will be helping out with the marketing for Adventure Out and getting the name out there for more to enjoy and participate. Look forward to this experience and being able to add more things and skills to my life checklist. See you guys out there!

Green Technology!

Im not sure if you have heard yet, but our world is actually in an environmental crisis. Thats the bad thing. The good thing is that big corporations are finally changing(or being forced) to do something about it. Kudos to Whole Foods Market, The EPA, Vail Resorts, New York University, The World Bank Group, and The Tower Companies for choosing green sources for 100% of their 2007 electricity purchases. Companies going in this direction should be noted and supported. Some of the methods being created for green energy are pretty interesting and high-tech. Wind, solar, geothermal, and biomass are amonng the most popular.

More About Green Technology

Adventure Out is also currently in the process of switching to become a "greener" company. We are now working with executive of 1% For the Planet, Terry Kellogg, to have more sustaibable office practices, products, and transportation options like ride-share carpools for clinics.
