San Francisco, Calif – July 8, 2002 – GirlsAdventureOut.com, the company that offers adventure tours and vacation opportunities exclusively for women, made an exception to their all-female criteria on Tuesday morning when they welcomed Liam Mayclem of KRON4 Morning News as the first male member of their extremely popular surfing clinic. The piece, inspired by the recent surge in women’s surfing, aired live Tuesday morning, July 2, and featured a quick glimpse of what the GirlsAdvertureOut clinics offer.
Designed to introduce the novice surfer to the fundamentals of the sport, and get them out- and usually standing up- on their first waves, the GirlsAdventureOut surfing clinics have fast become one of the most popular features of the GAO event calendar. Rarely do spots go unfilled, a testament to one of the company’s goals- to offer women the chance to try new sports in a safe and supportive environment.
"It was a great experience, and a lot of fun," said Claude Silver, co-founder of GirlsAdventureOut and surfing guru. “But more than that, it was extremely satisfying to have the media recognize women’s surfing as a sport. Popular culture generally showcases the male surfer stereotype, when in fact, there are just as many, if not more, women out on boards these days.”
And it isn’t just KRON4 recognizing that fact. GirlsAdventureOut recently made an agreement with Universal Pictures to work cooperatively with public relations representatives in promoting their new film, Blue Crush, a teen drama that centers around the lives of three young women with a passion for surfing, scheduled for release August 16, 2002.
According to Judeann Smith, CEO and President of GirlsAdventureOut, "We’re really excited about working with the representatives from Universal to help promote this film. It’s a great fit with what GirlsAdventureOut represents- empowering women and allowing them to find their inner strength and peace through outdoor adventures."
The partnership includes sponsored events, movie paraphernalia giveaways, and of course, free passes to the movie- distributed through raffles on GirlsAdventureOut.com, as well as to each member of the surfing clinics held now through the movie’s release on August 16.
